Looking for computer recommendations for home video surveillance.?

Query by maficboy: Searching for laptop or computer suggestions for house video surveillance.?
I am searching for a way to get webcams or the like and use them for residence safety purposes.

I figure that I could get a personal computer that has numerous usb ports or equivalent and it would be dedicated just for that objective. I would use a broadband connection to stream photos off-website (not all the time), have a UPS (ten-15 minute duration). I'm thinking of 4-6 cameras currently being managed by 1 software program package deal.

I'd like the cameras mid-variety - a ccd or very low light camera possibly isn't really required, until that would be the desired device for the task.

So generally, I'm seeking for the computer, software, cameras and UPS. I don't will need comments on home networking or bandwidth. Pc dimension isn't really an issue, it will be tucked out of the way and not moved (racked, probably). Running system isn't really all that important (unix would be preferred but not essential) The cameras can be possibly fixed or movable - I haven't truly figured out how I want to lay them out however.

Ideas?
