Could we use a standalone pc for the DVR?
or would it be far better to purchase a Laptop based protection system from
a dealler, preloaded with application, and configured?

I believe a standalone protection DVR with eight channels is much cleaner and simpler except you are hoping to do one thing innovative on the Personal computer.
